In this post, I’ll walk you through the basic steps to access, customize, and print this chip bag label using Canva. You’ll even get step-by-step instructions to make the entire process a breeze.
Why Use Chip Bags as Party Favors?
Custom chip bags have become a popular choice for great favor bags because they add a unique, personalized touch to any celebration. … The first step for me was seeing them at a family member’s party. I didn’t always know you could make them yourself! The very first template I created was after seeing custom chip bags at a family member’s children’s birthday party. I thought, “Wow, those are really nice and different!” It sparked my interest, and I wanted to learn how to make them myself.
At the time, there were a lot of Photoshop and Microsoft Word templates available for creating printable birthday chip bag templates. However, I was intimidated by Photoshop and didn’t enjoy using Word for design. Since I was already familiar with Canva, I created my own printable chip bag template when I couldn’t find one for Canva. When I started selling my designs, people began asking for the template.
I even made a video showing how to use the template, which now has over 100K views. Ever since, I’ve been creating and sharing DIY party favor templates, free printables, and more for Canva.

How to Access the Free Chip Bag Template
Canva Account:
First things first — you’ll need a Canva account. Canva offers both free and Pro options, and the good news is you don’t need to pay for Pro to use this template. If you don’t already have an account, signing up is quick and easy.
- Free Account: This gives you access to plenty of design tools and templates, including the one we’re using in this post.
- Pro Account: For those who want access to premium design features, try Canva Pro with a 30-day free trial to elevate your designs.
Instant Download
Once you’re logged into Canva, download the linked PDF document to access the template. The file will land in your downloads folder or digital display storage. If using mobile, try switching to a computer if you encounter issues.
Once you’ve opened the template, click “Use Template” to start customizing it in your Canva workspace.
Supplies Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to create your custom printable chip bags:
- Printer: Any good-quality inkjet printer that prints high-quality images will work. Here are some excellent options.
- The Best Paper: For the best results, we recommend using glossy photo paper such as Hanging with the Kiddos DIY Party Glossy Paper Sheets or similar glossy brochure paper for best results
- Adhesive: You’ll need Double-sided Tape or Hot Glue
- Optional: Pinking Zig Zag Scissors for decorative edges.
- Optional: A paper crimper to give your chip bags a professional finish, or use digital crimps for a similar effect without manual crimping.
- Optional: 1 oz chip bags or other small party favors to fill your bag
💡 You can also use plain paper or thin paper, but the finish may differ based on your personal preferences.
You can choose the borderless option when printing, or use a paper trimmer to neatly cut the white border/white edges if needed.
Customize Your Free Chip Bag Template Design in Canva
Once you’ve opened the template, you’ll see several frames where you can drag and drop images, colors, or other design elements. With Canva, there are no limits to your imagination — you can fully customize the template to match your party theme.
Once you open the free chip bag template, you’ll see placeholders for:

Here are some quick tips for working with the Canva fram template:
- Backgrounds: Drag and drop your desired background image or color into the front and backside frames. This will set the theme for your chip bag.
- Text & Clipart: Feel free to add extra elements like text, clipart, or even photos to personalize your design. If you need high-quality images for personal use, Canva’s free library offers a great selection, or you can upload your own.
Tip: Lock the Frames!
Before you start adding additional elements like text or clipart, it’s crucial to lock the background frame in place. This will ensure that the frame doesn’t shift as you add more details on top of it.
How to Lock the Frame:
- Select the frame, then click on the “Lock” icon at the top right of the Canva interface.
- Alternatively, right-click on the frame and choose “Lock” from the menu.
Locking the frame helps keep your design organized and allows you to work efficiently.
Download and Print Your Free Chip Bag Template
After customizing your chip bag design, click on the “Download” button at the top right corner. Choose the PDF Print option for the best quality. Your design will be saved to your computer, ready for printing.

With a glossy finish and 37lb weight, it’s sturdy enough for wrapping without being see-through. This paper is smudge-proof and dries quickly, making it perfect for vibrant colors party printables.
Printing Tips:
- Print at Actual Size: In the print settings, ensure that you do not choose to fill the page. This option can resize your template improperly. Instead, select the option to print at Actual Size or 100% Scale.
- Adjust Printer Paper Settings: When printing on glossy paper, you’ll need to adjust your printer settings to match the paper type. This step is crucial for achieving the best print quality. Select Glossy Photo Paper as the paper type, and set Quality to Best.
How to Assemble Your Custom Chip Bags from the Free Template
- Position and Fold: Lay the printable label face down and fold the left and right flaps to create a crease.
- Apply Adhesive: Secure the right side to the left side, overlapping the white section, using double-sided tape or hot glue.
- Seal the Bottom: Close the bottom to ensure your treats stay securely inside.
- Fill Your Bag: 1 oz bags of chips (favorite chips).
- Small goodies like candy, stickers, and small toys.
- Party favors like temporary tattoos or tiny crafts.
- Close the Top: Seal the top with double-sided tape or hot glue.
Optional Step – Use Paper Crimper: For an extra touch of authenticity, use a paper crimper on the top and bottom of the bag, or add a digital paper crimps without the need for manual crimping.
